Vijaya Raghava Sastri GaruSwamiji’s Thirunakstram – Preparation Begins with Packaging of sweets – Would you like to take part ?Does God prefer one flower over another – Why do we choose pretty fragrant flowers for prayer?
Offering beautiful flowers of different colours and pleasant fragrances to God is a part of everyday routine in prayers at every home and temple. Sri Chinna Jeeyar Swamiji explains during the ‘LakshaPushpa:rchana’ event on what the offering indicates.
A mantra from Yajurvedam says,
యథా వృక్షస్య సంపుష్పితస్య దూరాద్గధో
వా త్యేవం పుణ్యస్య కర్మణో దూరాద్గధో…
A fragrant flower symbolises ‘maturity’. External beauty of the flower w.r.t colour and shape of the petals is only appreciated when it gives a pleasant fragrance. The ‘look and feel’ can drag you towards a pretty flower, but you will choose to stay away from it as soon as you experience an unpleasant odour. But, if the pretty flower has a pleasant fragrance, we accept it. The flower gives a sense of sweet feeling and you will want to share it with others.
Similarly, we as individuals are more cherished when our behaviour and actions reflect a sense of maturity and wisdom. People around us and the surroundings are benefited with such an individual. By offering pretty fragrant flowers, we pray to God for giving us that kind of beauty that is inside and outside.
Also, anything that we offer to God with LOVE is precious to him.He does not prefer one over another. However, elders recommend qualified offerings because these offerings leave us with pleasant feeling over others. The recommended offerings motivate us to become ‘pleasant and mature’ so that we can serve the world as service to HIM. For ex: A fragrant beautiful flower or honey or milk or a fruit are all offerings that are good for our health to help us serve actively;and good for our thought to help serve rightly.

What does Vedam say about Lakshmi Devi? Why worship Her when Lord Narayana is the Ultimate protector?
Lord Himself says in Sri Pa:nchara:tra Agama Scriptures,
లక్ష్మీ హి పురుషకారత్వే నిర్దిష్టా పరమర్షిభి హి
మత్ ప్రాప్తిం ప్రతి జంతూనాం సంసారే పతతాం అథహ

Have you ever thought in the following lines?

Why am I going through hard times?
How do I stay happy all the time?
Is there end to all suffering in the world?
What is the purpose of my life?
Where did my loved one go after the death?
Why do good people get into troubles?
How do I get out of this temporary state?

We experience hardships because of the arrogance in us. We believe that we are very powerful and independent. It is not what we do, but it is these thoughts with which we do our duties that bonds or releases us from the karma. Finally, one day – when we get tired of trying to do everything and then realising that there is something that is driving us, We then seek refuge of that Supreme power, then we look for help.
The answer to all such above questions is Bramha or Aanandam. Scriptures say that this ‘aananda thatvam’, whom we call God takes a form and begins to give sadupadesam, wise words. So, why not we just identify that form and pray to him, who is Lakshmi ammavar then?
Well, this aananda thatvam by nature has an ability to rule the creation and a power to protect us. The karuna, compassion in him is deep down within him. And hence, he wishes to eliminate the arrogance in us by making us experience the effect of the arrogance-filled deeds that we have being doing. We are then given different bodies to experience the results of all our wrong doings and then come out of the chakram/samsaram. But, we are like Duryodhana who said, జానామి ధర్మం జానమ్యాం అధర్మం, నహి మే నివృత్తి – I know what is right and what is wrong, but I don’t want to do the right thing and I don’t want to stop doing the wrong thing.
Thus, we are taking births forever!
Then comes the Mother Lakshmi. She is by nature just compassion. She is described as having deep blue eyes, depicting her compassion, asithekshana. As soon as she finds some level of aanukulyam in us, a positive tendency towards God, she encourages it. She also tries to create interest towards God. She then works with God and recommends us on our behalf. Without Her, he is just in the mode of ruling through punishments. And our punishments are never coming to an end because we keep acquiring more and more karma!
Parama rushis, the rushis who meditate on God’s nature are the foreseers and have identified the Lakshmi thatvam to be the ONLY way to get the complete grace of God. It is not only because of their acceptance about Lakshmi thatvam, but even God likes the recommendation of the mother. It is proven in kakasura vruthatham in Srimad Ramayanam. He does not say ‘no’ to those recommended by her.
The mother, Maha Lakshmi’s companionship with God makes him to forgive us and grace us from the bonds of the samsaram. She makes him ‘Purusha’ (Puru+Sanothi = to give more), and is therefore called ‘Purushakarini’.
May the grace of Mother Maha Lakshmi be on us which is the only path to the pure bliss that God can give us!

What is snapanamu (abhishekam)? Why should one offer it to God?
Snapanamu is an important service offered to God. It appears as if we are trying to clean the deity through this service. While it might be that the physical element of the deity is being cleaned during snapanamu, we need to remember that the God himself is the personification of purity. So, what is the intent of snapanmu?
The skin of our body needs a mechanism to maintain cleanliness. However, our indriyas cannot be cleaned with the same mechanism as that of the skin. Similarly, the athma (self) can be cleaned from impurities by another mechanism. This mechanism is what is being taught by Vedic scholars through events such as snapanamu, archana, etc. When we offer water, milk, flowers, kunkuma, tulasi etc. to Lord and then take them as prasadam, the impurities within us begin to take a backward turn. Anything that is offered to God and then reaches us has the power to clean impurities within us that we lack the strength to clean ourselves. Why can’t we clean them ourselves? Over the innumerable lives, we acquired a sense of ego and attachment forgetting the goal and true source of life. Thus, it is very difficult to even know that we are at fault, forget about ability to clean or remove the impurities!
It is for our benefit that we offer snapanamu to Lord and take the remnants as theerthamu. The theertham gives us the strength to clean ourselves of ego and bondage and realise the true nature of the self.
